Spectacle and Spectators in Quintus' Posthomerica (Vortrag in englischer, Diskussion in deutscher Sprache) The reputation of the epic poet Quintus of Smyrna is on the rise. In the wake of a general reappreciation of late antique literature, recent studies have shown how his close imitatio of Homeric language actually leaves room for considerable aemulatio. When we broaden the scope of our analysis from language to narrative style, there is even more originality to be detected. In my paper I will discuss the role of spectators (or focalizers) in his epic, and contextualize this device in terms of late antique literature’s penchant for visuality and of the romanized society Quintus lived in.
